Burning Cat is a convention from the creators of Exploding Kittens. At this event things will happen. You will play games. You will learn things. People will talk. A large man will be dressed as a cat. You do not have to talk to this man. A cat might explode. We suggest you avoid this cat.
1. We wanted to fix the things that were wrong with traditional conventions.
2. We wanted to create an event that was actually fun.
3. We wanted to build a giant cat that explodes.
When & Where?
May 16-17, 2020
Oregon Convention Center
Portland, Oregon U.S.A.
Our courageous story
We’ve attended a lot of gaming conventions. A lot of them. There are things we like. We like the fans. We like the games. We like the creativity. But there are many things that we don’t like. We don’t like that most conventions are basically glorified shopping malls. We don’t like that despite being a gaming convention, very few people play actual games or have actual fun.
So, we decided to reboot the idea of a convention. We decided to build something new from the ground up. We decided to focus on a core philosophy: this is a con you attend if you want to have actual fun. This is a place to observe and/or participate in games, comedy, and creativity. This is a place for tabletop gamers, card game players, casual party game players, families who love games, game makers, or anyone who ever hosted a game night.
Burning Cat is an event for people who are tired of screens and want to have fun face-to-face.
Burning Cat is a game night
brought into the daytime.
In the center of our convention will be the life force of Burning Cat: THE RING. Inside this gladiatorial cage, humongous, oversized games will be played. Stupid stunts will be performed. New sports will be invented. We will defy the laws of nature. We will defy the nature of laws.
- Cat-themed American Gladiator.
- Dodgeball, but the balls are massive and covered in hair
(we call this game Hairball).
- A dunk tank full of LaCroix™ sparkling beverage.
- The world's largest game of freeze tag.
Everyone is welcome to participate in The Ring.
Or just watch if that’s your thing.
The cat who burns
Towering over it all will be our Burning Cat. She is our Goddess. Our muse. Our Catleesi. She will preside over the convention like a furry Sauron. There will be a countdown timer at her feet. When the convention ends, she will erupt with the light of a thousand stars. She will implode into something terrible and wonderful. She will transform.
She will "burn."
Are you an influencer? We would like to invite you to a VIP EXCLUSIVE social nightclub experience. To attend the VIP influencer event, please meet in the Applebee's parking lot located near the I-5 off-ramp, approximately 45 miles south of Portland. We will provide toilets. Water is available from a hose (not provided).
Ja Rule is not organizing our event. He’s not involved in any way. Neither is that other dude from Fyre Festival.
He’s in jail right now.
This event is not on an island once owned by Pablo Escobar. It’s in Portland. Don’t wear a bikini or you will be cold.
We are not going to make you walk ten blocks away to some depressing hotel to play games with your friends. Games will be happening directly in our convention, and we will help you find people to play with. Burning Cat will be a source of games discovery. A nursery of sorts, but without diapers or screeching.
The first year of Burning Cat is an experiment. Some of our events and experiences might suck, and others might be amazing. By participating in this event, you’re helping us figure out what works and what doesn’t. You are the lab rats and we are the puppet masters. We dangle cheese from our strings. That is how puppetry works. It is a cheese-based profession.
Burning Cat is also a place for game designers and artists to meet and create new projects. It's like Tinder but way less sexy and with a badge hanging around your neck. Whether you have a prototype you want to test out or you have a seed of an idea, Burning Cat will help you make your game.
During our first year, we do not plan to place heavy emphasis on our guest speakers. We would rather focus more on playing games. That being said, Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal will be in attendance along with a handful of other game designers, comedians, and cartoonists. We’ll announce our guest speakers as we confirm them.
If you are interested in being a guest speaker, please sign up here.
We will be hosting several tracks of competitive gaming tournaments. Details are forthcoming.
